How can we eliminate poverty in Africa?

Developed countries including Japan should contribute to combat poverty in Africa as a member of the world. I’ll talk about how we should support them using following two points.

First, food technology. I’d like to define food technology as tecqunique to preserve delicate taste for a long period. I believe that this technology contribute to preservative food. Let’s take instant noodle for example. The founder of Nissin, Momofuku Andou invented instant noodle. It is well suited for preservative food. As evidence, instant noodle was brought to space shuttle discovery. Of course, it contributed to hunger in Africa. Distributing Instant noodle as food aids is one solution. Besides, this technology could be used to preserve crops they cultivate.

Second, to generate job opportunity for people in Africa. I believe that launching a business in Africa or investment would be effective to increase their income. Let’s take semiconductor factory for example. Sony build one semiconductor assembly factory in Thai land. Establishment of this factory increased employment and boosted Thai land’s economy. This is just case for Asia but the analogy of this idea could be applied to the case in Africa. The chance of succeeding depends on environment such as geographical conditions, education, culture and so on. However this strategy would be one of the possible solution for eliminating poverty in Africa

In conclusion, it’s no exaggeration to say that Developed countries play an important role to tackle with poverty from food aspect and industry aspect.

Food Problem

When we talk about this issue, we need to separate it into two categolies in terms of types of countries. One is in developed countries and the other is in developing countries.
In developed countries, enough amount of food is provided, and also people consume more than they actualy need. In those developed countries, poeple's concern is how to reduce calories they take, how to have balanced diet, and how to keep adequate amount of daily exercise to keep in good shape.
On the other hand, in developing nations, it is said that in total about 800 million peple can not get necessary amount of food on daily basis. So many children die because of malutrition, and average life expectancy there is quite short. The growth rate of populaton is rather high, due to high infant mortality rate and local customs, which encourgare more births, and lack of education and contraceptions.
In Niger, more than half of women get married and have her first child at the age of 15 or 16, and average number of children in one family is 8. There, the demand for food has been increasing. Therefore in developing countries, the balance of supply and demand in food has been collapsed, leading to the situation of food shortage for each person. It does not necessarily mean local stores do not have food, but it says that not everybody can put food into his/her mouth. Some farmers without farm land have to spend more than 90% of their income for food.

How to solve this problem?

First of all, they need to keep producing adequate amount of food to meet the demand in the country. If you divide total amount of food in the whole world by the number of population, you will find, everyone on this planet has enough food. So it shows that food is not in shortage, but distributon is the problem!
This problem is seriously concerned with north-south problem and socio-economic problems in the developing countries themselves. The north-south problem is explained as follows: Industrialized countries in northern hemisphere buy raw material at low price from developing countries in southern hemisphere, then export value-added manufactured products to developing countries at high price, which has resulted in uneven distribution of wealth between in northern countries and southern countries.
In India, target of food production has been achieved in 1980s, but still now so many people die because of malnutrition. Poor people with so many family members cannot buy food in the store and raise all of their children. As this case shows, the problem of food distribution in developing countries is based on the problem of poverty and gap of income.
To solve this problem, investment by developed counties on the infrastructure like education, hygine, research and development in agriculture, irrigation, and road construction is required. But probably the toughest problem would be to change the mindset of local people in terms of view towards life、which governs and is deeply rooted to their mind, which is therefore very persistent.
To make matter worse, future of food supply also looks bleak. Even people in developed country especially people in non-self sustainable country like Japan do not know if they can get adequate amount of food in the future. We people living in developed country rarely have questions about where these food come from. In the future, the rise in food price is expected due to watershortage which is resulted from population growth. Agriculture requires huge amount of fresh water, and actually two-thirds of fresh water is used for it. When serious water shortage occurs, which side of people would suffer first, do you think? North or South? There is no guarantee for them to be able to get out of this complicated vicious cycle now and even in the future.
